Saturn
was known to the Greeks as Kronos, lord of time and the Titan son of Ouranos and
Gaia. Kronos, oppressed by Ouranos' smothering embrace
of his mother Gaia, and unable to emerge, cut off his father's deep thrust phallus
and threw it into the sea. From this, Aphrodite was born. In
turn Kronos ate his own children, fearing advice from an oracle that he would
be overthrown by them. On Gaia's advice, Kronos' wife gave him a stone wrapped
in swaddling clothes instead of the infant Zues. Kronos was
later forced by Zues to regurgitate his children - Poseidon, Hades, Hers, Hestia
and Demeter -and release his father and brothers. Zues used
the thunder and lightning given to him in gratitude by the Cyclopes to wage war
on Kronos and the Titans, and to defeat them. Thus ended the Golden Age and began
the Silver. Celebrated in the December festival Saturnalia,
where authority was over thrown and slaves allowed temporary liberty to do what
they liked for seven days. Saturnalia was later repackaged as Christmas. Saturn
is remembered on his day, Saturday. Saturn is always portrayed
as old, usually carrying the sickle of time. He is associated with discipline
and limitation, requiring tenacity and hard work. This may be seen as negative,
but he offers ample reward for work. |
