God
of war - accompanied by his retinue of Fear, Dread, Alarm, Discord, and Terror.
Known to the Greeks as Ares. Son of Jupiter, consort of Venus and father of Cupid.
Patron of farmers. Mars is another case where the militarist culture of Rome
transformed the nature of the god's Greek origins (see Venus). To the Greeks,
Ares was an unpleasant character, bloodthirsty, a braggart and a coward. He was
a tempestuous lover and an unscrupulous friend. As a Roman, Mars was far more
complex. Originally an agricultural god, he was the father of Romulus, founder
of Rome. As the empire developed, so did Mars' more bellicose aspects. He developed
a code of war and honour which belied his origins. Mars, second in importance
only to Jupiter, was celebrated in Rome during the month of March, which was named
in honour of him. On 1 March, the sacred flame in Vesta's shrine was lit, while
sacred buildings and the homes of priests were decorated with laurel, the tree
of victory always associated with Mars. Horse racing was held on the 14th, before
the Ides, and on the 23rd the holy war trumpets were purified. It is
no accident that Mars was so important to Rome, The empire rose and fell within
the Age of Aries. Its demise accompanied the beginnings of Christianity and the
rise of the Age of Pisces (the Piscean fish being also the early symbol of the
Christ). In french, Tuesday is Mardi. In english the day belongs to Tiu,
the Scandinavian god of war and equivalent to Mars. Warrior and lover, Mars
is concerned with assertion and the masculine side. Aggressive, decisive and forthright
sexually. Brusque and hasty. |
