God
of the underworld, known to the Greeks as Hades. After the overthrow of Kronos
the universe was divided. Zeus took the sky, Poseidon the sea, and Hades the underworld,
realm of the shades. Here ran the River Styx, over which the dead had to cross.
It was also home to minerals and clear spring water, as well as being the source
of crops. Hades abducted Persephone, the daughter
of Demeter (Ceres), the corn goddess, when she bent to pick the hundred-blossomed
narcissus planted by Gaia in honour of Hades. Fertility evaporated. Springs ran
dry and death appeared among men. Demeter wandered the earth looking for her daughter. Eventually
Zeus intervened and ruled she could return unless she had consented to her abduction
in some way. Persephone had eaten a pomegranate seed given her by Hades, so it
was decreed she spend six months each with her mother and her husband. Persephone
represents the power of growth in corn, and Hades the period of winter death and
dormancy. So implacable and frightening was the god
of death that worshippers would avert their eyes when making sacrifice. No-one
would say his name aloud, so he was called Pluro, "giver of wealth"
in honour of the blessings of the earth. Lord of destruction
and regeneration, Pluto is an enthusiastic lover. His domain is the underworld
and his emotions are buried. He can be cruel and ruthless, to achieve his ends,
but his destruction can make way for necessary renewal and regeneration.
